Part of Lux’s goal is to dismantle the stigma around surviving sexual violence. Survivors were victims of a crime; there should be no shame surrounding it. Through open and honest discussion, you can personally help dismantle the stigma. Here are a few other methods.
Lux supports all survivors of sexual violence, regardless of gender identification. Because of that, we want to address the statement “men get raped too.” The use of the word ‘too’ in this context is harmful to both women and men. It invalidates men’s experiences as victims by making their experiences contingent on females’ experiences and increasing the stigma and shame associated with sexual violence. It invalidates women’s experiences by attempting to mitigate the severity that sexual violence has had on their everyday lives by deeming it a "gender-neutral experience." Use of language matters - please respect survivors by using respectful language.
